What’s the survey about?
Existing research suggests that migrant and minority communities tend to be disproportionately affected by crises like the COVID-19 pandemic and that individual and community resilience in the face of such challenges is dependent on strong community networks, trust and mutual support. With this in mind, this survey explores how people in the Italian-Australian community have coped with the impact of COVID-19; what social networks and community support they have drawn on throughout the pandemic; and how government policies have impacted on patterns of social and community engagement and interaction.
Who is doing the survey?
The project is being conducted by Dr Simone Battiston and Dr Damon Alexander from the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia. The project is partially funded by Comites Melbourne.
Who is eligible to participate?
Eligible participants must be Australian residents of Italian-background and be 18-year-old, or older.
What am I being asked to do?
We ask that you complete this anonymous survey which includes questions on how you have been affected by COVID-19 and how you have coped with the impact of the pandemic – including the kinds of social and community resources you have drawn on for support. The survey should take you approximately 10 minutes to complete and can taken in either English or Italian languages.
To be useful, surveys such as this need a large number of responses. If you know other people who are eligible to complete the survey, we would appreciate you sharing the survey link with them so we can maximise response numbers.
There is a possibility we will be conducting follow-up interviews with a small number of participants to talk about their experiences in coping with the pandemic in more detail. If you are interested in participating in this part of the project, please provide your contact details at the link below.
How will my survey response be used and how will my identity be treated?
Your participation in this survey is voluntary and you are free to withdraw at any time prior to submitting your survey responses. The survey is anonymous, and your responses will be kept confidential. Only aggregated results (not individual responses) will be mentioned in the research output.
The anonymised survey data will be used for future research by the Swinburne team members Dr Simone Battiston and Dr Damon Alexander, including for scholarly publications and conference papers. The data will also be made available to other researchers under Open Access arrangements. All data will be securely stored in Cloud Storage made available by Swinburne University for 5 years after any publication or published outcome. After that, the data will be disposed of securely.
How can I get information on results from the project and about the research team?
Project updates and publications will be made available here and via the research team’s webpages.
How can I get support if I need it?
Many of us have struggled to cope with the impact of COVID-19 on our lives since the pandemic began in early 2020. If you experience any emotional distress while completing the survey, we encourage you to contact one of the support services available below:
